A Better Goal

But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
– Philippians 3:13b-14

It’s important to have goals.  But not all goals are equal.  As a boy I made it my goal one day to catch a limit of bullheads.  Bullheads are small catfish.  The limit at that time was 100 per day.  I fished all day and managed to catch my limit.  I was very proud of myself.  What a fisherman I was. I caught 100 bullheads.

But then I had to clean them.  It was a smelly, tedious job. By the time I had them all ready for the freezer, I never wanted to see a bullhead again.  In fact, I don’t think I have ever eaten them since. I accomplished my goal, but it wasn’t a worthwhile goal. I had forgotten to ask the key goalsetting question: Is this the best goal to pursue?

The Apostle Paul reminds us that there is a better goal to pursue in life -the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.  Do our other goals line up with this better goal? Do they help or hinder us as we press on toward the upward call of God? We can strive to achieve many goals, but if these goals get in the way of achieving the best goal – life with Christ – then they are no more worthwhile than a hundred bullheads.  Keep your eye on the prize and set your goals accordingly and discover true success.
