A Boatload of Fish

When (Jesus) had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let
down your nets to catch some fish.” “Master,” Simon replied, “we worked hard all last night
and didn’t catch a thing. But if you say so, I’ll let the nets down again.” Luke 5:4-5 New Living Version

Why do we always tell God what he can’t do, rather than expect the miracle God wants
to do through us? Long ago I heard the story for the call of Peter. He had fished all
night and come up empty. When Jesus told him to throw the net out once more, Peter
thought it was useless, but he did it anyway, and the catch filled two boats!

I’ve never caught a boatload of fish. I did however have an amazing catch. I was fishing
off an ocean pier. I had fished all day like Peter but had come up empty. Then a most
amazing thing happened. A huge school of fish swam under the pier. Suddenly
everyone was catching fish one after another. Sometimes even two at a time. In no
time everyone’s cooler and buckets were filled to overflowing just like Peter’s boat. I
heard it estimated that up to a quarter million fish were caught from the pier that day.

If you would have asked me an hour earlier, I would have told you that such a thing was
impossible. Fish don’t ever bite like that. But they did that day. And I was blessed to
experience it.

Peter expected more failure but instead got a boatload of fish. What are our
expectations? Do we expect to fail? Or can we dare to hope that God might show up in
a mighty way, and perhaps even change our lives? After that catch of fish Jesus issued
an invitation to Peter to follow him and fish for people instead of fish.
Peter left his nets
and entered on a new adventure with Jesus.
Expect a miracle (even if it’s not fish). The miracle you see might be one that happens
in you.
